Summer 2020 Musical Theatre Classes

All classes run July 6th- 31st.

All classes will be held COMPLETELY online! Participants must have access to good internet connection and the Zoom app.

Junior Musical Theatre Lab:

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00AM-12:30PM. Ages 12-15.
This eight-class training program enables young artists to explore the contemporary musical theatre world as they receive voice, movement and acting training. This class will enhance the student’s skill in all aspects of Musical Theater Performance, including song selection, song interpretation and stage presence. Students will explore a wide variety of musical theatre disciplines including: audition prep, acting a song, proper breathing technique, movement, building a character, and more. Musical Theatre Lab:

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-2:30 PM. Ages 16-18.
Students explore how to interpret and connect to the lyrics to tell the story in the song. Students will use scripts, songs and scenes to combine the musical theatre disciplines of acting, singing and dancing. Aspiring actors will learn the importance of stage directions, how to create their own characters, vocal projection and emotion. Material selection will be customized to best compliment and challenge each young actor. Students of varying experience levels are welcome. Cost: $120.00. Register HERE for this class.

Theatre Dance:

Theatre Dance class is an hour long class that begins with a warm-up including basic technique as well as stretching, conditioning, and cardio. The warm-up is followed by the teaching of a musical theatre combination. Light acting is included in the combination. This fun, fast-paced class teaches a wide variety of Broadway dance styles.
Teens (Ages 12-15): Mondays from 3:30-4:30, All levels welcome!
Beginner (Ages 16-Adult): Mondays from 6:00-7:00, All levels welcome!
Advanced (Ages 16-Adult): Mondays from 7:00-8:00, Previous dance training and knowledge recommended. Cost: $10/class Register HERE for this class.

Musical Theatre Audition Prep Workshop:

In this one day special workshop students will learn and master the Do’s and Don’ts of the auditioning process. Students will explore a variety of topics including how to select appropriate material for auditions, learn how to build a rep book, and how to appropriate interpret and perform audition material, how to handle cold readings, and more! Students will walk away from this course with the tools and knowledge that will help them stand out in any audition setting. Prior performing experience recommended.
Session 1 (Ages 12-15): Saturday July 25th from 10:00AM-12:30PM
Session 2 (Ages 16-18): Saturday August 1st from 10:00AM-12:30PM

John Wagner (Director/Choreographer) is a professional actor, director, and choreographer originally from Connellsville, PA.  He began performing at a very young age and knew early on that the performing arts would always be a major part of his life. He holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from the Shenandoah Conservatory at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia and an MA in Performing Arts Administration from the Steinhardt School at New York University. As an Equity performer, Wagner worked in Phoenix, Arizona with Phoenix Theatre, the Arizona Broadway Theatre, and Broadway Palm West. He has also worked for West Virginia Public Theatre, CalRep Pennsylvania, and American Entertainment Productions. He currently divides his time between his work in New York City and his work for local theatres in Southwestern PA. He has been the choreographer for Geibel Catholic High School for the past ten years. Additionally, his work as a director and choreographer has been seen on the stage of the Geyer Performing Arts Center in Scottdale and in the amazing Summer at the State productions at the State Theatre. Wagner is excited to use his professional experience to teach and inspire performers.

Six to eight week sessions are offered of workshops to hone various skills in Acting, Musical Theatre Performance, Auditioning, Dance, and more!  Each session offers classes to specific age groups to enable performers of varying ages and abilities a class that will help them grow as a performer. Taught by John Wagner, director and choreographer of our Summer at the State musicals, our classes will challenge and inspire!
